I have been using Explorer 8 with XP for many months. Suddenly I can't save a web jpg and the following message appears:- "A problem with this web page caused internet explorer to close and reopen the tab. This tab has been recovered'.

This is happening when I right click the picture and select 'save as'. It happens on every web page I try it on.

I have scanned with malware bytes, ccleaner & AVG. All scans were clear.

Apart from this problem the computer is working very well.

Thanks for your help.

Dave

The issue is most likely caused by incompatible or outdated add-ons in IE, although it could be a number of other things, too.
First, try running IE 8 in no add-ons mode and check if that fixes your problem.

Click the Start button, and select All Programs.
Click Accessories, and select System Tools.
Click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

If disabling all add-ons solves your problem, you might want to use Add-on Manager to disable all add-ons and then turn them on one at a time to see which one is at fault.

Next, be sure your Java and Adobe are up to date. (See our Articles section for instructions on how to check.) An outdated Java, for instance, can cause havoc with IE settings.

If Java and Adobe are up to date and disabling add-ons doesn't solve your problem, try resetting IE back to its default settings. This removes all changes that you've made to it. Don't worry, it saves your favorites.

Close all windows.
Open IE by clicking the Start button, then Internet Explorer.
Click the Tools button
Click Internet Options.
Click Advanced tab, then Reset.
Click Close and OK.
Close IE and reopen for the changes to take effect.

Thanks Ally,

I did everything suggested but unfortunately nothing made a difference. Adobe & Java were certainly out of date but are now OK. I had no Explorer add ons. I then set explorer back to the default settings, but unfortunately this made no difference either.

The problem only started four days ago, so I tried system restore & this made no difference either.

Is there anything else you can suggest please?

Kind regards,
Dave

You're welcome Dave. I'm sorry the easy fixes didn't work.

If you have Silverlight, and it's up to date, you might want to try uninstalling it. It can sometimes conflict with Adobe in IE8. You can always re-install it if that doesn't help.

You can uninstall and reinstall IE to see if that solves the problem.

Another real possibility is that you have undetected malware on your computer. Since you had an outdated Adobe and Flash, it makes it more likely since when they are outdated they are known conduits for malware. The best way to eliminate that possibility is to post a Hijack This for Judy. She has some powerful tools that can find malware if it's there. If you go that route, be sure to read the pinned topics carefully at the top of the page before you post. Also, be sure to direct her to this thread so she can see what you've tried.

There are some registry fixes and fiddles that sometimes work, but I am not comfortable instructing you in that area.

One last thing... Are you married to IE? Have you thought about trying Firefox or Chrome? Many of us here use those browsers instead of IE and like them better.

Hi Ally,

I uninstalled & then re-installed Explorer as you suggested. Problem fixed.

Thank you very much for your help. I am very appreciative.

Kind regards,
Dave
