There was a spam caught on my server which was deleted when I emptied servers spam, but it appeared in my widows inbox when I opened that. It became "inaccessible" and stayed popped up on my emails list and I could not delete it. It wasn't until I rebooted, cleared my cache and rebooted again that it disappeared. It was listed in the Resident Shield, see att s/shot. A rerun of my AV no longer lists it

A search shows this as a trojan carrier, it's from Clare and subject says 'scan from a xerox WorkCentre Pro N 644042
'
How can I tell if this was a fake alert?

It's not unheard of for spam to contain malware and in fact, it's quite common. It looks like your antivirus detected it and stopped it. I'm not really sure what you're asking, but it looks like it was a legitimate detection.
