Normally this wouldn't be such a big deal, but this time is a little different. The forum software that we use here has undergone a major upgrade, so in the interest of security, and to take advantage of all of the new features, we must upgrade to the new version. What makes this such a big deal is that the new version of the forum software will not support Internet Explorer 6 (or earlier). If you use Internet Explorer 7 or 8, you'll be fine. Also, if you use Google Chrome or Firefox, you'll be fine. If you still use IE 6, we urge you to upgrade to IE 7 or 8, or consider using Google Chrome or Firefox. You can download Google Chrome here, or Firefox here. Right now I only have a rough estimate for when the upgrade will take place, but it's better that everyone be prepared now instead of waiting until the last minute. Due to some unforseen circumstances, I've had to re-evaluate the upgrade date, and have no estimated date at this time. More details about the changes will be coming soon.

QUOTE (SirJeff @ Aug 17 2009, 06:54 PM) How to upgrade IE depends on what version you have, and what version you want to upgrade to. To see what version of IE that you have, click on Help > About Internet Explorer in your browser's toolbar. Hi Jeff, I have 7...I guess that is okay?? Thank you for answering my question...Apprecaite it! Auntbee

Just to let you guys and gals know what's going on, I'm still waiting for some of the "add ons" that we use here to be updated to work on the new version. The arcade is probably the most important one that I'm waiting on. I know y'all like the games. Here are some of the things that you can look forward to after the upgrade. Many people have expressed a desire to be able to add or submit links to our "Helpful Links" page. So, we're listening to you. After the upgrade there will be an area where you can submit links to the programs and resources that you use, so that others can try them out. Of course to prevent spammers from taking over the links area, all submitted links will need to be approved by management before they will be visible to everyone.
links.gif ( 14.07K )
Number of downloads: 25Also, due to an ongoing spam problem, we will be moving away from the "Contact Us" and "Contact Webmaster" forms. We will be implementing a "Ticket System" where you can submit "tickets" for management. With the ticket system, we can customize the categories, such as a "Website Issues" category for problems with the website, etc. With the ticket system, only you and management will be able to see the "ticket", so "sensative" issues can be dealt with through the ticket system. The Tips Wiki will also undergo a major change. The person who developed the wiki module hasn't been seen or heard from for some time, so it's doubtful that they will be upgrading it to work with the new forum software. So, that area will be moving over to an "Article" system which will also allow us more customization, and has an overall better appearance as well as better functionality.

You'll be able to access the site, but it won't appear as it should, and some features may not work.
The problem with IE is that until recently, Microsoft didn't care about web design standards. MS didn't adhere to the protocols used in HTML and CSS. As far as I can tell, MS still doesn't care about "standard compliance", but they are making IE more compliant than it was in IE 6 and earlier versions.
The lack of complaince with established standards comes from being a monopoly. When IE was the only legitimate browser on the market, they didn't have to worry about complying with standards, because webmasters would code their sites to render correctly in IE. Now that there are alternatives, and those alternatives are gaining popularity, MS has to change the way they play the game.

It's not that they're trying to get people to spend money. Being the overwhelmingly dominant browser made Microsoft "lazy". As the standards advanced, Microsoft didn't, because everyone had to work around what Microsoft supported. Now, with Firefox and Google Chrome gaining in popularity in leaps and bounds (and both of them supporting the full standards), Microsoft has to play catch up, or fall completely off the map in the Internet browser market. And, as for the kids, what do you need kids for when you have us? Kids are messier, and more expensive than we are.
