Recieved the following email from a friend's addy..

I'm sorry for this odd request but I have no other option due to the urgency involved. It is because of the dire situation we find ourselves right now. We are stuck here in Scotland, where we came for a three week holiday. We have been robbed of our luggages, cash, credit cards and cell phones, It�s such a crazy experience for us, we need help flying back home and the authorities are not being 100% supportive but the good thing is that we still have our passport but don't have enough money to get our flight ticket back home, please I need you to loan me some money, I will refund it to you as soon as I'm back home. I promise you will get it back once we get back home.

Problem is they live in Omaha and the originating IP is in Nigeria...Nope, don't think I'll support any Nigerians in this life time...

Open Office Users.... Advice Please

Does anyone here use Open Office. If you do what do you think of it? Is it really compatible with Microsoft products etc.? Are there any drawbacks to it? Hubby is looking at the possibility of installing it on some computers in a non-profit organisation because they aren't going to be able to afford the Microsoft equivalent so we'd really like any feedback that you have on it. It will need to be compatible with Microsoft products as it won't be going on all the computers in the organisation.

Real Time Protection

I use the Avira A/V for my computer protection.
Could i have your thoughts please on whether it would be adviseable to leave the Microsoft Real Time Protection turned On with Avira running full time ?
I realize it possibly / probably will slow down the operation a bit with both running / scanning, but do you think there could be a conflict created when i do this.

hi everyone
i have recieved this email today,into my junk folder, from hotmail,asking me to confim my details,with a link to click,now i know there are many such emails floating about that are bogus,this one looks genuine,it has the windows live logo on it,but i have had my account for years and never recieved an email asking me to confirm my details since it was set up

The NEW Hotmail has arrived..
I just left a post on "Off Topic" .. I left my Hotmail open .. went to catch
the NEWs. when I returned , I hit the refresh button.. had 2 pages open..
BAMmmmm I have this new stuff.. facing me tonite.
I'm not sure I'll get the hang of this new stuff.. I do see the "SWEEP Button"
.. heck I rarely sweep any more I just mop now they are telling me to

Driver Is Missing

A box pops up when I boot up my Toshiba laptop. It says a driver is missing, Apriltr.sys. It also says: Alps Pointing-device Driver for Windows 2000/XP Setup Disk1 is needed.

I use a wireless mouse and it seems to be working perfectly. Do I really need that driver? Or is it not for a mouse?

New Windows Live Hotmail

When I get an email that seems suspicious I always view the message source before I open it. My Hotmail just switched to the new version and I can't find a way to view the source before you open the message! The old version you just right clicked on the message and had the option to view message source. Now the only place I can find to view the message source is in the Actions drop down of an opened message. Kinda defeats the pupose to have to open it first!

Does anyone know if there's a way to view the message source without opening the message?

I am on an XP SP3 computer using IE 7 at the moment, but at home I have Vista Home Premimum SP 2 with IE 7. Does the browser make a difference? Would Firefox or IE 8 give me different options?

Reinstallation Of Xp Home Edition

Found operating CD, so do I just follow the prompts beginning with "Install Windows XP?" Are there steps such as backing up anything, etc., before beginning? What about all those downloads such as ComboFix, FixPolicies and Rkill? Do I need to run a clean-up? What all am I going to lose?

My Dell DIM2400 system is currently running IE7, Version 2002, SP3 and have MBam, Spybot S&D, and SpywareBlaster installed. Total space is 37.2, Free Space is 22.7 and RAM is 1GB. Avast and PC Tools Firewall Plus are installed.

Forwarding Emails & Tracking Programs

Thought this was an interesting read & re-iterates the importance of removing everyone's email addresses if you do forward an email.

Not everything written below is correct, however there is some good advice

By now, I suspect everyone is familiar with snopes.com and/or truthorfiction.com for determining whether information received via email is just that: true/false or fact/fiction. Both are excellent sites.

1) Any time you see an email that says "forward this on to '10' (or however many) of your friends", "sign this petition", or "you'll get bad luck" or "you'll get good luck" or "you'll see something funny on your screen after you send it" or whatever --- it almost always has an email tracker program attached that tracks the cookies and emails of those folks you forward to. You can do your Friends and Family members a GREAT favor by sending this information to them. You will be providing a service to your friends. And you will be rewarded by not getting thousands of spam emails in the future!

Do yourself a favor and STOP adding your name(s) to those types of listing regardless how inviting they might sound! Or make you feel guilty if you don't! It's all about getting email addresses and nothing more.

You may think you are supporting a GREAT cause, but you are NOT!

Instead, you will be getting tons of junk mail later and very possibly a virus attached! Plus, we are helping the spammers get rich! Let's not make it easy for them!

Use Bcc at all times unless you absolutely want the others recipients to know whom you are also sending to.

ALSO: Email petitions are NOT acceptable to Parliament or any other organisation - i.e. Centrelink, etc. To be acceptable, petitions must have a "signed signature" and full address of the person signing the petition, so this is a waste of time and you are just helping the email trackers."

Oe Blocking Outgoing Mail Attachments

My SIL says that her OE grays out "send" once she adds an attachment. The message is "Outlook is blocking her unsafe attachments."
I know how to tell her how to unblock incoming attachments, but this one is a new one for me???
She is able to open received attachments but not send any.

Mac Finder Acting Up

I love this site and I always come back.

I have a question regarding Mac. I don't own a Mac myself and I rarely use it so my question could be a very easy one.

Yesterday, I was helping my photographer friend with a photo shoot. Afterwards, when he was trying to transfer/save the photos on his Mac, they disappeared. Or so he thought. Within a few minutes, I found his photos and saved them on a separate folder on the desktop.

Today, he called me and said that the programme Finder has changed.

Before, when he clicked on Finder on the menu on the bottom of his screen, it would show all folders (for instance, All Pictures, All Documents) etc.

Now when he clicks on Finder, however, a window appears with contents of the desktop only. Basically, a window to the desktop.

To access the "original view" on Finder, he has to click on Program on the menu of the bottom of the menu and then select Finder.

This is obviously not a huge problem other than that he's a photographer and sometimes has to process about 1000 pictures from a photo shoot. Finder makes his life easier.

How does one change the "folder view" in Finder back to the original setting?

Can any one please help me with the email settings for virgin media using M/S Outlook?
I have tried searching on Google and found some settings from an ex virgn employee as follows:
Open Outlook and click 'Tools/Email Accounts/View or change existing email accounts, click next.In the email accounts window,click change.
I have entered the necessary information in the required fields, then I click more settings.
On the general tab I have entered, pop3virginmedia.com. Under the Outgoing Server tab I have placed a dot in the 'Use same settings as incoming mail server' eg: [email="********@virginmedia.com"]********@virginmedia.com[/email]
On the connection tab there is a dot in the 'connect using my local area network' (LAN)
Under the advanced tab the following have been entered:
Server port numbers
Incoming server (POP3) 995
this server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) is ticked

Outgoing server (SMTP) 465
This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) is ticked

Server Timeouts is set at Five minutes

When I click on test account settings the results are:
Establish network connection OK
Find Outgoing server (SMTP) OK
Find Incoming server (POP3) OK
Log on to incoming mail server Failed
Send test email message Failed

I have tried reverting back to the original port numbers ie: 110 and 25 but that does not work either.
Therefore I seem to have exhausted the various settings and all to no avail.

My Operating System is Windows 7 64 bit
The PC is one I built myself 2 years ago, it has an Intel core2 quad Q6600 processpr
8 GB DDR2 memory
1TB hard drive
Asus P5N32-E-SLi motherboard
Nvidia Geforce 8800 GT graphics card
Any help in solving this problem will be much appreciated because I do not like using Virgin's own Virgin Mail

Hosts File Question

i watch some episodes of old tv series on you tube, and usually because of my hosts file, they're commercial free. but suddenly i was getting commercials. so i checked for the latest update for the hosts file, and updated it.

all but one commercial is now stopped. (a lexus one - gee, i wish i could afford one of those ...lol)

is there a way to block it? or contact the people who compile the hosts file so they can add it to their list?

I was reading in ZDNet about Microsoft issuing a temporary "fix-it" to block ongoing zero-day attacks against a new code execution flaw in Windows Shell (ZDNet's words, not mine). Restoring Deleted Folder

In my husband's OE, under deleted items there was a folder called John's Stuff. It shouldn't have been there, but anyhow... He deleted the deleted items and that folder went with it.

I read a bunch of stuff and did find that specific folder in backups, but it's a dbx, and I don't know what to do next to get it back.

hello, I haven't been on here in a while but I knew this was the place to come when I couldn't figure this out... You are all so great at helping.

I have a IE script error message coming up on about every single page I open. Here are the details of my system...

Operating System: XP
Amount of RAM installed: 1GB

Antivir Solutions Taken Over Computer

My grandsons laptop seems to have been take over by a programmes called Antivir Solutions, it appeared in his task bar. He cannot even get on Internet Explorer, I was going to do a hijack but cant do that.

I have belonged to a Simple Machines Forum (free) where I do a lot of his tutorials...I have never had any problems in the six months I have belonged to it. In the last two weeks every time I go to this group my modem shuts down and my Netgear router shuts down...I have to reboot them both to get back on the internet. Would anyone know what may be causing this or be able to tell me how to fix it. I belong to several other group forums, (Simple Machines, Proboards, Yuku etc.) and no problems what so ever.

Thanks much if you can help me with this.....I did advise the owner of the group and he has no idea what is going on. I am the only one that is having this problem.

a friend of mine has a acer netbook running win xp he picked up a virus
i have been trying to do a restore to earlier date but it wont let me
he has disks for his other acer to do full restore but net book dosnt have cd drive
any ideas on how to overcom problem?

Networking Via Router Problems

Our old router died after a year. I purchased a d-link router and set the computers up via wired (3) and wireless (1) connections. One wired connection didn't take for some reason. The computer died for a few months and for some other strange reason it has decided to start running again.

I have a feeling that the computer I'm having problems with is due to the fact that I somehow messed up the networking. For the life of me I can't figure it out.

The main computer just has listed under the network connections: Local Area Connection enabled Realtek....

The second computer (which is the one that is not working) has these set up:

Internet Gateway: Dell XPS Disabled

LAN or High-Speed Internet: Local Area Connection 2 Network Cable Unplugged (it is not unplugged) D-Link....
Local Area Connection Connected Intel® Pro/100 VE Network
1394 Connection Connected 1394 Net Adapter

How do I work this out?

I'm considering adding Real Player SP ( free download) as a media player.. video downloader and other features to my XP.. is it a resource hog?
Are there things that maybe negative also about this one ?
I used to use this , however it's been a very long time ago.

A friend sent me a photo taken from their digital camera. It is a dat file. It opens up in Windows Photo Gallery, but when I try to print a copy, I get a message saying "Windows cannot find this picture". It is clearly in the Windows Photo Gallery, and also in Pictures, I can see the picture in there. What do I have to do to be able to print it?

There was a spam caught on my server which was deleted when I emptied servers spam, but it appeared in my widows inbox when I opened that. It became "inaccessible" and stayed popped up on my emails list and I could not delete it. It wasn't until I rebooted, cleared my cache and rebooted again that it disappeared. It was listed in the Resident Shield, see att s/shot. A rerun of my AV no longer lists it

A search shows this as a trojan carrier, it's from Clare and subject says 'scan from a xerox WorkCentre Pro N 644042'
How can I tell if this was a fake alert?

Deleting A Folder

I have Windows XP, Service Pack 3

I recently deleted all the items in a folder I had created, named �Storage�. When I go to �File� and �Browse a New Folder�, the Storage folder (Now Empty) is still listed. I tried a �Search� on All documents�.in the Document Folders�.System Folders and Hidden File Folders, and it didn�t find this folder. How can I delete or get rid of this folder named �Storage�, so it doesn�t show in my �Browse a New Folder� listing?

Sp3 Install

I am traveling for the next 6 months with laptop and I TOTALLY missed the news that Microsoft would no longer do updates automatically after July 13 if you do not have SP3. I have been avoiding it as I tried it once and it messsed up the computer. Sure don't want to be here with no machine.

I have XP Pro and have read all the threads I can find here on the subject, but still feel like maybe I should wait till I am home where I have another computer? I have some experience with the computer but the articles make me think I do not have enough experience to try it....maybe never.

I have my external hard drive with me, but it shows only 26GB available, so probably not an option to image the hard drive on it. C Drive shows 34GB. I did system restore but one of the hints says SP3 will remove all the restore points. Not sure what to do about that? I can burn files, but where do I find the restore points to burn it or maybe store it on the external? Feeling very unsure here and wanting opinions I guess.

My computer is running very slow at times, on Virgin Media Web site there is a downlod for the Uniblue reg booster, which I down loaded and ran it it said I have 142 errors in my registry, if I want to fix them I must purchase the product at �20. Has anyone tried this reg-booster, and would you recommend it?

Hi, I've tried so many times to block one particular email address (it's a person's email address rather than a company one) and despite me going into hotmail and putting their email address in the BLOCKED SENDERS LIST, their emails always get through to me. Can anybody please advise me what else I can try?
